Know Good Men: Mel Fisher
March 16, 2025Know Good Men: Never Give Up, Never Quit!
Hey Brother,
I recently heard the story of Mel Fisher, the infamous treasure hunter, and I have to share it with you!
Most men can handle failure for a few days, weeks, or months...
Fisher faced failure every day for 16 years!
Living in Key West, Florida, he spent his days hunting down myths, chasing legends, and dreaming about gold… lots of gold!
He was on a mission to find the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, a Spanish galleon that sank in 1622, carrying a fortune in gold and silver.
Most people told him he was crazy, that he was wasting his life.
“You’ll never find it,” they said.
And for over a decade, they were right. He found nothing but shipwrecked debris, false leads, and empty ocean floor.
He worked in brutal conditions — the baking sun, violent storms, and financial ruin.
He lost friends, lots of money, and even lost his son to the sea.
Yet, in spite of everything, Mel woke up every day and said the same thing...
"Today is the day!"
No matter what life threw at him, no matter how hard things got, he never stopped believing he would find his treasure.
Then, after 16 years of failure, the impossible happened.
He found it!
Off the coast of Key West, he discovered the Atocha and $450 million worth of gold and silver!
To date, it's the greatest underwater treasure discovery in history.
I get goosebumps thinking it, working that hard, searching for that long... and never giving up.
Most men quit when things get hard.
They let setbacks define them.
They doubt themselves and give up on their dreams.
Not Mel Fisher.
His unshakable belief carried him through every failure, and with each failure, he knew he was one step closer to his treasure.
He didn’t say “if” I find it — he said “when.” I find it.
Mel had a vision so strong no setbacks, no failures, no doubters could shake him.
Too often, we let fear and doubt hold us back. We hesitate, we second-guess ourselves. We quit too soon.
But men like Mel show us the truth — the only way to failure is to give up.
Life is hard, really hard at times.
Regardless of your aim, the road will be long, and the struggle will be real.
The key is to just never f*ckin quit!
But every setback is a lesson. Every failure is a stepping stone.
And if you refuse to quit, if you keep moving forward, no matter what, one day you’ll wake up and say:
"Today’s the day," and it will be!
The only question is — what's your treasure — and are you willing to go all in to find it?
Live Brave. Live Bold. Live Bearded
P.S. "Know Good Men" is a new series dedicated to sharing the stories, values, and wisdom of history’s greatest men—leaders, warriors, visionaries, and pioneers who defined what it means to live with strength, honor, courage, and discipline.
