How a Beard Trim Can Make Your Beard Look Thicker
June 13, 2019Let's face it, the thought of trimming your beard is scary. Whether you're attempting it yourself or seeing a professional, it's never a comfortable feeling when you hear those beard trimmers kick on. But what if I told you a beard trim can actually make your beard look thicker? It may sound a little counter intuitive but let me tell (and show) you how.
As you grow your beard out, your beard hairs will grow at different rates. Your chin may grow faster than your neck or vice versa, and it's different for every one of us. So as your beard gets longer, it's going to start to look a little "scraggly" at the ends. This is why I personally think it's a good thing to trim your beard every few months, even if you're growing your beard out and want it long.
For the purpose of showing you guys how it can make a difference, I met our brother Danny at the Barbershop to document it all. Now Danny has been keeping his beard long and really wanted to change up his look so he took it shorter in this video than you have to, but the concept is the same.
Trim your beard at your chin
The first cut you should make is at the end of your beard. When you are sizing up the cut, the idea is to trim your beard back to where the bulk of your beard is and cut away the ends where you have less hairs. By doing this, the new end of your beard will have a lot more hairs creating the shape of your beard which will make your beard look not only thicker, but way healthier as well.
With Danny he opted to take about 2 inches off to start, and by evening the ends out his beard instantly looked thicker and healthier!
After you even out the bottom of your beard, you can go in and balance everything else out. When you take length off your chin, you'll want to balance the sides and corners out to match so those areas aren't longer than your chin.
As I always recommend, treat your beard like a hedge and work your scissors or electric beard trimmers from the outside of your beard. Trim back any hairs that stick out crazy to perfect the beard style you're after.
That's essentially all you need to do to make your beard appear thicker, fuller and healthier and again, you really don't need to take much length off to achieve this yourself!
Repeat the steps if need be...
Now as I mentioned earlier, Danny really wanted to change his look up. So we started by taking an inch or two off, and then did a second pass to get the length HE really wanted!
As I've said before, start small and go back to take more off if need be. You're better off taking the time to do two passes than taking too much off the first time around and being disappointed. So we went in for round two to really bring his beard down another couple inches and really change his look up!
What's amazing about our beards, is you can trim them short to change it up a bit and it'll grow back in no time!
Here is another example of how taking a couple inches off the ends can make a huge difference! Wiz had some serious length but over time it started to get super thin at the bottom. By taking a little length off to where the beard has more bulk, his beard look way thicker and healthier!
Remember to apply your beard products before you trim...
I didn't mention this earlier, but it's absolutely worth mentioning. You want to go through your daily beard routine before you trim your beard so your beard is styled and laying the way it does on a daily basis.
So for Danny, he washed his beard with his all natural beard wash , applied his beard oil and beard butter , and used his blow dryer to straighten his beard a bit. Some final touches with some mustache wax and he was good to go.
Final Thoughts
Don't be afraid to trim your beard! It's not a bad thing, even if you want a massive beard. Trimming the ends (even if it's only a half inch or so) and evening out your beard can and will make a huge difference on how your beard looks.
