Curly Beard Tips: How to Straighten a Beard
January 07, 2019Every day here at Live Bearded, we get guys who reach out wanting to know how they can straighten their curly beard. Whether they want it perfectly straight, or they just want their curly beard to be a bit less curly, we get asked for help ALL the time.
So much so, that I thought I would cover a few different ways for you to tackle your curly beard, and straighten it out a bit (or a lot). Let's dive right in. The first, and easiest option...
Beard Products
Now we know beard products have a lot of benefit on beard growth and health, but they also make a huge impact on the way your beard hairs lay down. So my first, and easiest recommendation to straighten a curly beard is to use a few key beard products.
First, make sure to get your beard wet with hot water and wash your beard with an all natural beard wash . Whether you hit the shower or head to the sink, wash thoroughly and towel dry your beard to get about 90% of the water out.
From there I would recommend applying your beard oil to the skin underneath your beard. Now, beard oil won't straighten your beard at all (that's next), but it will help with growth and health.
A product I personally use to straighten out my beard a good bit is Beard Butter . Beard butter is a deep conditioner that will relax the hairs, while offering a light to medium hold to straighten out your curly beard just a bit. Now, it's not going to make your beard super straight, but when you apply your butter and brush your beard out, it will make a huge difference on how your beard look, feels and of course smells!
After you apply your butter, I recommend using a Bamboo Brush or Boar Hair Brush with a curly beard to really grab hold and move the hairs into place. What I like best about using this method, is it really only takes a couple minutes of your time, but will make a really dramatic impact.
Blow Dryer
Now there is some debate as to whether a blow dryer can damage your beard. Technically, yes it can, but only if you use too much heat for too long, and don't replenish the moisture blow drying can eliminate.
That said, using a blow dryer on your beard is arguably the best way to straighten a curly beard. I didn't exactly know how a blow dryer worked at first either, so don't worry if you don't know how to use ablow dryer, I'll cover everything you need to know.
Before you start, make sure to wash your beard and apply your beard oil as I mentioned above. This will clean and relax the hairs, and the beard oil will provide some moisture to your skin, and coat the beard hairs to help protect from the heat of the blow dryer.
Grab a bamboo brush or beard comb and first comb up (against the growth of your beard) and out. Follow the comb with the blow dryer and work around your entire beard from your neck up to your cheeks. This will separate the hairs and "fluff" your beard out a bit.
After you work your way around, taken your comb and blow dryer and comb from the top down. This will then force the hairs to lay down tighter against your cheeks and ultimately straighten your beard hairs.
Using a blow dryer is in my opinion the best way to to straighten your curly beard, and it only takes an additional few minutes. I personally don't use a blow dryer as the beard products alone straighten out my beard enough for the look I prefer, but if you're looking for an even straighter look, give it a try!
Flat Iron
Now if you're REALLY looking to straighten your curly beard, you may want to look into a flat iron (mini straightener). Now I can't speak from experience here as I've never personally used one, however I've see a few guys use a mini straightener to make their curly beard super stick straight.
I must caution you though, as this can cause some serious damage to your beard if you're not careful. You're essentially applying a super hot metal surface to your hairs to fry them straight. This not only takes some serious time, but it can destroy your beard. So if you really want a perfectly stick straight beard, you can give it a shot.
Now to each his own, so if you want to give this a shot I support you to do you. However, I don't really recommend it to be the best way to straighten a curly beard.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, it really comes down to what look YOU prefer best. Whether that means you rock the curly beard you have, or use one of the methods above to straighten it a bit (or a lot). Do what gives you the most confidence in the way you look.
