Breaking News. The Secret to a Better Beard Is Simpler Than You Think

How We Met Brad Perry from CW7 and Helped Him Level Up His Beard

Every once in a while something happens that reminds us why we do what we do.

That happened recently with Brad Perry, a morning show anchor for CW7 here in Arizona. We met Brad at a local pizza shop during lunch, and he started telling us how he has always wanted to grow a great beard, but it hasn't worked out.

So naturally we said "Too easy brother, we know a few things." And walked him through exactly what he needed to know to grow the beard he has always wanted.

After he started following our recommended routine and saw real changes in his beard, he reached out. Not just with a thank you, but with an invite.

Brad wanted us on his show to talk about beard grooming and share what actually works.

So we showed up. We walked in, set up, met his team, and spent the morning talking beards, routines, and what it really takes to grow a healthier, better looking beard.

And now we are breaking that down here.

What We Teach Every Man About Growing a Strong Beard

A great beard does not come from luck. It comes from a great routine.

Growing a beard that is thick, free from itch and flakes, looks and feels amazing, and makes you feel confident when you rock it all start with a few simple principles that anyone can follow, whether you are just starting or you have been growing your beard for years.

Below is the exact routine we walked through with Brad and the same one we recommend to every man who wants a beard that looks and feels healthy.

STEP 1. WASH AND CONDITION YOUR BEARD

Keeping clean is not something we should have to convince you to do, and when it comes to your beard the rules still apply.

Just like the hair on your head, you want to wash your beard, then restore it with conditioner. That combination is a big part of healthy beard growth and overall beard health.

Here is the simple process. First, rinse your beard with water. Then squeeze a quarter sized amount of beard wash into your hand and work it into your beard. Our beard wash is natural and water based, so it lathers up great as you scrub it in.

Rinse the wash out thoroughly. Then squeeze a quarter sized amount of beard conditioner into your hand and work it through your beard. We recommend leaving it in for 1 to 2 minutes so it can really soak in and help soften your beard.

How often should you wash? It depends on how dirty you get. If you work outside, sweat a lot, or train hard, daily wash and conditioning can make sense. If you are not getting very dirty day to day, you can adjust from there.

Also, beard wash is not the same as typical shampoo, bar soap, or body wash. The skin on your face is more sensitive than your scalp and body, so you want something designed specifically for your face and beard. The goal is clean without stripping your oils or wrecking your skin balance.

STEP 2. BEARD OIL. MOISTURIZE YOUR SKIN

A great beard starts with healthy skin.

Beard oil is designed for the skin under your beard. A lot of guys think beard oil is only for the beard hair, but the real purpose is skin health first.

As your beard grows, it pulls oils away from your face in an attempt to keep the beard hairs healthy. That can leave the skin underneath dry and irritated if you do not replace that moisture.

If you deal with beard itch, a lot of the time it is simply dry skin.

Start by dabbing about 5 to 7 drops of beard oil into your hands, then work it under your beard into the skin. Once your skin is hydrated again, you are setting the foundation for stronger, healthier beard hair.

If you have any extra oil left on your hands, rub it into your hands, arms, or even your head hair. It is a solid moisturizer across the board and can help keep tattoos looking healthy too.

Beard oil is a daily step, no matter your beard length, because it is all about skin health.

STEP 3. BEARD BUTTER. SOFTEN AND STYLE

Next up is beard butter.

This is the step that helps your beard feel softer, look more put together, and stay controlled throughout the day. It conditions the hair, helps tame flyaways, and keeps you looking dialed.

Scoop out a dime sized amount of beard butter and melt it down in your palms. It is a shea butter based formula, so it melts down quickly and applies smoothly through the beard hairs.

Use it daily the same way you would style the hair on your head before you walk out the door.

PRO TIP

You can save money on this entire routine by grabbing the Complete Kit which includes all 4 products mentioned above, with a discount for bundling them together.

DON’T FORGET YOUR MUSTACHE

This one is optional, but if you like pairing a beard with a mustache, especially a handlebar, you are going to want mustache wax close by.

If you are early in the growing stages, start using wax early to train the hairs. Think of it like parting your hair in a new way. At first it can be unruly, but training makes it easier.

Apply wax from the middle first, then work outward. As it gains length, use your finger and thumb to twist and shape the ends upward.

COMBS AND BRUSHES

You would not put product in your hair without running a comb through it, and your beard is no different.

Choose your tool based on your beard length and thickness.

Shorter beards do great with a boar hair brush because it helps move the hairs in the same direction and brings circulation to the skin.

Short, medium, and long beards can benefit from a wood comb, carbon fiber comb, or acetate comb, but please do not use plastic as it can and will damage your beard. Very curly beards usually need a pick or wide toothed comb to get through comfortably.
