Is Beard Shedding Normal?
You’re combing your beard in the morning, look down, and see a few fallen soldiers in the sink.
Naturally, your brain asks, “Is this normal, or did I contract some rare disease that’s making my beard fall off?”
Good news. In most cases, beard shedding is completely normal.
Most men can shed around 10 to 50 beard hairs per day, depending on beard length, thickness, grooming, and the season. So if you see a few hairs in the sink, your brush, or on your shirt, don’t panic.
Your beard is probably just doing beard things.
Why Does Beard Hair Shed?

Beard hair sheds because every hair goes through a natural growth cycle.
First is the Anagen Phase, where the hair is actively growing. Then comes the Catagen Phase, where growth slows and the hair transitions. After that is the Telogen Phase, where the hair rests in the follicle. Finally, the Exogen Phase is when the old hair sheds and makes room for new growth.
That’s why you may see a few beard hairs in the sink, your brush, or on your shirt.
Most men shed around 10 to 50 beard hairs a day, so a few fallen soldiers are usually no big deal. One quick way to check is to look at the end of the hair. If it has a tiny white bulb on the end, that usually means it was a normal shed. If there’s no bulb and the hair looks snapped or frayed, that may be breakage, which usually means your beard needs more moisture, conditioning, or gentler grooming.
That’s not your beard falling apart. That’s just the normal cycle doing its job.
When Should You Be Concerned?
![]()
A few beard hairs here and there is normal.
What you want to watch for is a sudden increase in shedding, obvious patchy spots, unusual dryness, brittle hair, breakage, or irritated skin under your beard.
That’s when your beard may be telling you it needs better care, or that something is off in your routine.
The Simple Beard Shedding Routine
Keep it simple.
Use Beard Oil daily. Follow with Beard Butter. Comb or brush regularly. Wash and condition as needed. Don’t over-wash. And don’t attack your beard with a brush like it owes you money.
A little shedding is normal.
A dry, neglected beard is technically optional, but we wouldn't recommend it.
